Art is a part of cultural life in Jakarta. Therefore, Jakarta Bienalle 2009 has become a demand and Jakarta's shining light for the the development of art and culture. As the capital of the Republic of Indonesia, this is the time for the city to determine the apprecation of art, and also provide social and cultural spaces for the people.

I welcome the Jakarta Bienalle 2009, that makes art as a tool to achieve the changes, and also involve the stakeholders of the city. This program is expected to stimulate and direct the development of art in Indonesia in general, and especially Jakarta. It also coincides with the our efforts to make 2009 as the Creative Industrial Year.

I hope the programs held throughout the Jakarta Bienalle 2009 will become an international event, and colour the lives of the people in the city. Besides that, it can also be a creative forum for artists, that's inseperable to the people's cultural and city life.

Finally I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the founders and all the parties who have contributed and made this event possible.
