CURATORIAL CONCEPT:

The Jakarta Biennale 2009 “ARENA” is a regional biennale. It will exhibit works about Southeast Asia by artist from the region and beyond.

Southeast Asia comprises of developing nation-states that were mostly born and grew out of the demise of the World War II. Culturally, the region is the meeting place of great civilizations and world’s oldest religions through trades, migrations, and colonization. The Southeast Asia nations are not only united by the cultures and traditions firmly held by their peoples, but also by the rich varieties and hybrid natures of their societies.

CURATORIAL RATIONALE:

To take a closer look at the representations of various contemporary situations in Southeast Asia through contemporary artistic practices.

To read and map the paradigm of Southeast Asian contemporary artistic practice in order to get a clearer picture of the specific nature and characters of the region within the broader contexts of global cultural spheres.

To foster the distinct praxis of Southeast Asian contemporary art ini the wider international art scene.
